Mink Removal & Control in Indiana

American mink are semi-aquatic mustelids found near Indiana's rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes. They are fierce predators that kill prey larger than themselves and are best known for devastating poultry flocks — mink can kill every bird in a henhouse in a single night. They enter through surprisingly small gaps (1 inch diameter) and may also kill fish in backyard ponds. Mink are a furbearer species managed through trapping seasons. Licensed wildlife control operators can trap problem mink and advise on securing poultry housing with appropriate wire mesh (hardware cloth, not chicken wire) to prevent future access.

Common Mink Issues

  • Mass killing of poultry (chickens, ducks, geese) in overnight raids
  • Predation on fish in backyard ponds
  • Entering through small gaps in poultry housing
  • Caching excess prey near water sources

Prevention Tips

  • Replace chicken wire with half-inch hardware cloth on all poultry enclosures
  • Extend hardware cloth barriers underground around poultry runs
  • Secure pond fish with netting or install a deeper pond section (4+ feet)
  • Eliminate gaps 1 inch or larger in all poultry housing
