Eastern moles are subterranean insectivores found throughout Indiana. They rarely appear above ground but their extensive tunnel systems cause significant lawn and garden damage. Moles create two types of tunnels: deep permanent runways used for travel and nesting, and shallow surface tunnels used for foraging. The raised ridges and mounds (molehills) they create can kill grass, make lawns uneven and difficult to mow, and undermine garden roots. A single mole can excavate up to 150 feet of tunnel per day.
