Rabbit Removal & Control in Indiana
Eastern cottontail rabbits are abundant throughout Indiana and cause significant damage to gardens, landscaping, and young trees. Rabbits are prolific breeders with up to 5 litters per year of 3–8 young each. They are most active at dawn and dusk and feed on vegetables, flowers, bark, and tender shoots. In winter, rabbits can severely damage young trees by girdling — gnawing the bark around the entire circumference, which kills the tree. While rabbits do not typically enter homes, they den under decks, sheds, and dense shrubs. Licensed operators can trap and relocate nuisance rabbits and advise on fencing and exclusion to protect gardens and landscaping from future damage.
Common Rabbit Issues
- Vegetable garden destruction in spring and summer
- Winter girdling of young trees and shrubs
- Denning under decks, sheds, and brush piles near homes
- Consuming ornamental plants and flower bulbs
Prevention Tips
- Install 2-foot chicken wire fencing buried 3–4 inches underground around gardens
- Wrap young tree trunks with hardware cloth to 18 inches above expected snow line
- Remove brush piles and dense groundcover near gardens
- Plant rabbit-resistant species around garden perimeters
